I've been pondering the question of conservative antipathy toward Barack Obama and, for some reason, I remembered a backlash to comments he made about bitter gun-owning working class whites.

That's actually a pretty gross mischaracterization. To review Obama's words is an exercise in irony because what he actually said seems to me to have been pretty insightful at the time, especially given that he said it well before the Occupy movement, and—here's the irony—given how little progress has been made on this issue in the six years since Obama was first inaugurated:

This may seem like a surprise, considering how closely I follow the news these days, but when I was in the third grade, or at least I think it was the third grade, I couldn't have cared less about the news. And I had a school assignment to bring in a news article every day.

Quite a dust-up has arisen over Speaker John Boehner's invitation to Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to address a joint session of Congress, two weeks before an Israeli election that looks like it might go either for Netanyahu or against him, and without consulting President Obama first.

Update, February 6, 2015: The carpet installers didn't show up on Wednesday. It turned out there was a scheduling problem, and they came on Thursday. And it didn't take 3-4 hours as we'd originally been told, but 6-7 hours. Torrential rain had been forecast for that afternoon or evening; all my books were on the back deck, under a tarp, but still not where I'd want them to be for a storm. Fortunately, the rain didn't come until very early Friday morning and all my books are now safely back indoors.
